The Philosopher
Who is Epictetus?
Epictetus was born into enslavement in the first century and lived a life with almost no external control. Yet he became one of history's most influential Stoic thinkers. His philosophy centred on a simple but powerful distinction:
There are things we can control — and things we cannot.
Health, wealth, other people's decisions, markets, politics, and luck all sit outside our direct control. Our thoughts, values, choices, and responses sit firmly within it.
"There is only one way to happiness and that is to stop worrying about things which are beyond the power of our will."
For Epictetus, freedom did not come from money, status, or security. It came from clarity — from knowing where to place your energy and where not to.
The Problem
Why money causes so much anxiety
One of the biggest sources of modern stress is money. Not because people are weak or irresponsible, but because money sits at the intersection of uncertainty and necessity. People worry about:
The irony is that while money itself is not fully controllable, the process around financial decisions often is. What creates anxiety is not the loan itself, but confusion, pressure, and noise.
That noise comes from comparison rates, advertising, banks pushing products, dealers pushing approvals, and well-meaning opinions that do not apply to your situation.
The Connection
Where Epictetus meets finance
Epictetus would most likely say this: you cannot control interest rate cycles, lender policy changes, or how a bank assesses risk. But you can control whether you make decisions from clarity or fear.
Applied to finance, Stoic thinking looks like:
- Understanding your real goal
- Stripping away unnecessary complexity
- Focusing on suitability rather than hype
- Choosing guidance over guesswork
- Removing emotion from pressured decisions
Ancient wisdom
Focus on what you can control
Epictetus taught that inner freedom — the freedom to choose your response — is the only freedom that cannot be taken from you.
Modern finance
Structure removes friction
Money cannot buy happiness. But the right financial structure can remove friction, relieve pressure, and allow you to focus on what matters. That is not indulgence — that is rational control.
The Broker

Thrive Broking exists for people who feel overwhelmed by choice and unsure who to trust. Instead of pushing products, Thrive Broking focuses on:
Where Epictetus taught people to focus only on what they can control, Thrive Broking applies the same principle to money. You do not need to master every financial product. You need a clear goal and someone who understands the landscape.
The Bridge
How they relate to a customer needing finance
A customer seeking finance doesn't chase debt for its own sake. They are trying to solve a cash flow problem, buy time, unlock an opportunity, reduce stress, or achieve a goal.
Epictetus reminds us that peace comes from clarity and correct focus. Thrive Broking provides that clarity in a world full of noise.
"One offers philosophy. The other offers structure. Both exist to reduce unnecessary worry and help people act from confidence rather than fear."
And that is where ancient wisdom meets modern finance.
